overview

Changing Lanes: A Gender Equity Transportation Study uses a lens of intersectionality to envision gender-equitable transportation systems and policies that support accessible, efficient, flexible, and affordable mobility solutions for Angelenos of all genders. In turn, a gender-inclusive transportation system in Los Angeles also creates opportunities for economic development, drives progress on racial justice, and contributes to overall health and wellness.

process

As part of a multi-consultant team (Kounkuey Design Initiative, Toole Design Group, UCLA, Investing in Place, Pacoima Beautiful, Watts Century Latino Organization), I supported the development of the report’s final recommendations based on a comprehensive community-based research process. Each recommendation also features potential partners, and relevant case studies. The recommendation aim to fulfill the following objectives:

  • To inform transportation infrastructure, service, and program decisions, gather data about the patterns and challenges faced by women, low-income, and BIPOC individuals

  • Tailor transportation solutions to neighborhood density

  • Design a safe, convenient, and comfortable transportation environment

  • Improve efficiency of care-related and recreation travel without a car

  • Align transit services with how and when women travel

  • Develop new service options to support the ways women travel

  • Support trip-chaining and multi-modal travel

  • Implement programs to improve safety while traveling

  • Prioritize experiences, perspectives, and needs of low-income and BIPOC communities, particularly women, when developing mobility solutions
